Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves to penetrate deep into soft tissues. These sound waves create gentle thermal and mechanical effects within the tissue that help stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote natural healing.

At WHOW Aesthetics, therapeutic ultrasound is used to support recovery from musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain by improving tissue function and accelerating the body’s healing process. Ultrasound therapy can also be used in conjunction with regenerative treatments such as Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) to enhance tissue repair and recovery.

Ultrasound Therapy Treatment Areas

Ultrasound therapy may be beneficial for a variety of soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow
  • Shoulder tendonitis or bursitis
  • Muscle strains and spasms
  • Joint stiffness and arthritis
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Scar tissue and adhesions
  • Soft tissue inflammation

How is Ultrasound Therapy Used?

During treatment, a small handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the treatment area after applying a conductive gel to the skin. The device emits sound waves that penetrate the tissue and stimulate the healing response.

Ultrasound therapy may be used as a standalone treatment or combined with other therapies depending on the condition being treated. At WHOW Aesthetics, ultrasound therapy is sometimes used alongside PRF treatments to enhance regenerative healing by improving circulation and supporting tissue repair.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Therapy Treatment

Ultrasound therapy treatments are comfortable and typically last about 5–15 minutes depending on the treatment area.

Most patients feel a mild warming sensation as the sound waves penetrate the tissue, though the treatment is generally painless. Multiple sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal results, especially for chronic conditions.

There is no downtime, and patients can typically resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

Results

Patients may experience gradual improvement in pain, mobility, and tissue function over the course of treatment sessions. Ultrasound therapy helps stimulate the body’s natural healing response and can support long-term recovery from chronic or overuse injuries.

When combined with treatments such as PRF, ultrasound therapy may further enhance tissue regeneration and improve overall treatment outcomes.

Side Effects/ Complications

Ultrasound therapy is generally considered a safe and well-tolerated treatment when performed by trained professionals. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during or after the procedure.

Possible side effects are typically mild and temporary and may include:

  • Mild warmth or tingling during treatment
  • Temporary redness of the skin in the treated area
  • Mild soreness after treatment as tissues respond to therapy
  • These effects usually resolve quickly without additional treatment.

Although uncommon, complications could occur if ultrasound therapy is applied improperly or used in areas where it is contraindicated. Potential risks may include:

  • Tissue irritation or inflammation
  • Minor burns from excessive heat
  • Increased pain in sensitive or inflamed areas
